One Wish: Chapter Five

One Wish
Chapter 5:

It was 5th period; time for lunch. AS I ran off to the lunchroom, I banged into a girl with large brown eyes and short brown hair. I smiled at her and said I was sorry then ran off again to the lunchroom.

In the lunch room, I sat down in the corner. As I started to eat my lunch the same girl came up to me. She smiled at me and I smiled back then got back to eating. I wondered why she would want to eat at the same table as me, no one else even wanted to be near me. Vanessa had spread a rumor that I had B.O. (body odor). It was embarrassing but I held my head high. I didn’t want to be backstabbed; besides the children were all stupid to believe stupid rumors. They laugh now, but they probably won’t laugh if the rumor was about them.

“你 好。” The girl said to me.
“Excuse me?”
“I’m sorry, I said hello in my home language. My name is Elizabeth.”
“Oh. My name is Selena.”
“I’m new to this school and I don’t know anyone yet. My mom said this was a good chance to make new friends since I’m constantly moving. But she promised me that we wouldn’t move anymore.”

I stared at her blankly. How could she be so relaxed around someone who had a “B.O. issue”? Everyone was holding their nose when they saw me walking down the hall. I resumed eating my lunch and Elizabeth took out a container. She pulled something out of the container and it looked like a spring roll. Spring rolls were one of my favorite things.

“What are you eating?”
“Spring rolls, would you like one?”
“Sure!”

I took a spring roll and munched on the crunchy shell quietly. It was mixed with many delicious flavors. The spring rolls I have eaten had never tasted that good.

“Why did you choose to sit next to me? There are so many other people who you can make friends with.”
“It is because you are in pain. I can see it in your eyes. You feel unhappy inside.”
“Why do you care? Why didn’t you believe the rumors?”
“Because, I believe that everyone is struggling in this world. You’re one of the many people that don’t have it easy. Rumors are made so that people feel better about themselves, but you don’t need to hurt others to feel more superior. You need to respect others, not just yourself.”
“How would you know?”
“Because, I used to be one of them!” Elizabeth said. Tears rolled down her face and we ate lunch silently. But she wiped her tears away.

I think that this was just the beginning of a good friendship. My head felt lighter after I talked to Elizabeth. Maybe she was the friend I’ve been looking for. She was strong and she cared about others. If I had a choice I would have her as my only friend rather than having many others. MY wish was one step closer to coming true. Maybe wishes do come true…
